Saskatchewan Legislative Building’s 100th Anniversary
This year marks a once in a century celebration for the people of the province, as the Saskatchewan Legislative Building gets ready for its 100th anniversary.

“The anniversary is the perfect way for everyone across Saskatchewan to celebrate this architectural marvel and unique piece of our shared history and heritage,” said Harley Olsen, CEO of the Provincial Capital Commission.
Celebration plans were announced in October 2011, as Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart, Speaker Don Toth and the Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Bill Hutchinson, were joined by Grade 4 students from St. Pius School and W.S. Hawrylak School in Regina.
And on December 15, 2011, Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart and Premier Wall opened a time capsule that had been placed in a cornerstone during the construction of the Legislative Building over a century ago.
Among the items found within the time capsule, including photos of the Legislative Assembly of 1909, a Canadian Almanac, stamps and currency from the turn of the century, will go on display to the public in the Cumberland Gallery at the Legislative Building in the spring of 2012.
But plans are already underway to prepare a new time capsule, explains Olsen. The contents of the new capsule will be selected by a heritage committee based on suggestions submitted by the public before being sealed away for another century and another generation to discover.
“In the meantime we want to hear from you,” said Olsen. “Share your memories of the Legislative Building or, let us know what you think should be placed into the new time capsule.”
