Natural Environment

Nature Saskatchewan

Nature Saskatchewan promotes the appreciation and understanding of our natural environment through education, conservation and research, providing the cultural link by which people are inspired, gain knowledge of and ultimately enjoy and protect the natural world around them.

Some of Nature Saskatchewan's Stewardship programs are:

  1. Operation Burrowing Owl - is a program to protect Burrowing Owl habitat from cultivation, monitor population changes, and increase awareness of the owl. Landowners voluntarily agree to conserve grassland habitat for the endangered Burrowing Owl and other prairie wildlife.
  2. Rare Plant Rescue - is a unique voluntary stewardship program for landowners with rare plants or rare plant habitat.
  3. Shrubs for Shrikes - a program to protect Loggerhead Shrike habitat from destruction and cultivation, monitor population changes, and increase awareness of the Shrike. Landowners voluntarily agree to conserve prairie habitat, including shrubs, homesteads, shelterbelts, and pastures for Loggerhead Shrikes and other prairie species.
  4. Plovers on Shore - a voluntary stewardship program for landowners that manage lands and habitat that is important to the survival of the endangered Piping Plover. The Piping Plover is a small migratory shoreline bird that, on the prairies, nests and feeds on sandy and gravelly beaches of freshwater lakes and alkaline water basins.
  5. Nature Sanctuaries - Nature Saskatchewan owns or holds leases to six properties protected as nature sanctuaries because of their significant ecological character. Each sanctuary has Nature Saskatchewan members appointed as official stewards for the purpose of monitoring and protecting the land.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park

The theme of Wanuskewin Heritage Park is one of interpretation – exploring and explaining the meaning of the plains culture so that we can gain a better understanding of Saskatchewan’s First Nations peoples, and our common heritage.
